Gender Sensitivity Training Empowers Employees of the Human Rights Violations Victims' Memorial Commission

The Human Rights Violations Victims’ Memorial Commission recently conducted a comprehensive Gender Sensitivity Training (GST) for its employees on June 5-6. Held in conjunction with the 2023 Midyear Assessment and Teambuilding event, the training took place at the serene Laresio Lakeside Resort and Spa in Los Baños, Laguna. The GST was facilitated by Ms. Maricar Rovira-Chan, an esteemed independent Gender and Development (GAD) consultant, who provided her valuable expertise on various aspects of gender mainstreaming.
Ms. Rovira-Chan has an extensive background in delivering training sessions on fundamental topics such as Basic GAD Orientation, Gender Sensitivity, Gender Analysis and Use of Gender Analysis Tools, National GAD Planning and Budgeting, Local GAD Planning and Budgeting, GAD Code, GAD Agenda, and GAD-Related Laws. Her profound knowledge and experience ensured that the training was comprehensive, informative, and engaging for all participants.

The GST encompassed a wide range of crucial topics, offering valuable insights to the attendees. Some of the key areas covered during the training included:
- Concept of Sex and Gender: Exploring the distinction between biological sex and gender identity.
- Manifestations of Gender Biases: Identifying and understanding the various ways in which gender biases can manifest in society.
- The Social Construction of Gender: Unpacking the societal and cultural influences that shape gender roles and expectations.
- Legal Mandates: Familiarizing participants with the relevant laws and regulations pertaining to
gender equality and women’s rights. - Gender and Development: Recognizing the importance of integrating gender perspectives into development initiatives.
- Gender Sensitivity on a Personal and Organizational Level: Cultivating a deeper understanding of gender sensitivity and its application at both personal and organizational
levels.
The training received overwhelmingly positive feedback from the participants, with 74.2% rating it as excellent and acknowledging its immense value in promoting gender sensitivity within the organization. A minority of 25.8% rated the training as fair, suggesting areas for improvement
and further development.

The GST witnessed active participation from a diverse group of attendees, with 19 males and 13 females in attendance. The inclusive nature of the training allowed for a rich exchange of ideas and experiences, fostering a more inclusive and equitable work environment within the
Human Rights Violations Victims’ Memorial Commission.
